The 9th Tank & Refinery Conference
in Copenhagen ended succesfully

The 9th Tank & Refinery Conference had more than 120 participants from 7 countries. We spent an inspiring day in the heart of Copenhagen learning about the newest trends and developments in the Tank & Refinery industry.
FORCE Technology and VOITH would like to thank the speakers for their excellent contributions and thank all participants without whom the conference would not have been possible.

This year the conference HOSTED14 presentations
with presenters that are all authorities within their field of expertise

an excerpt of what was presented:

Dean McDermott, BP Angola Region Turnaround Manager:                                    Making Turnarounds a Success on FPSO’s in Angola
Turnarounds are challenging, significant business events. Getting it right takes a great amount of capability, teamwork and planning. Planning and executing Turarounds on an FPSO 160 km offshore in Angola brings a set of specific challenges that need to be considered.

Associate Professor Søren Kiil, DTU Chemical Engineering,:        Analysis of thermal insulation coatings
This work presents models describing insulation properties of thermal insulation coatings based on selected functional filler materials such as hollow spheres and silica aerogel particles.
Potential obtainable effects are discussed and illustrated with a case study on an insulation coating applied to a
                                                                     hot water pipe.

Rune Yding Brogaard, Drone Responsible, Advanced NDT Global:              UAV solution – using drones for visual inspection Using UAV inspection solutions for visual inspection, provides benefits such as:
                                           • Inspection of areas difficult to access
                                           • Preventive maintenance planning and optimized production
                                           • Access to areas that pose HSE risk to humans
                                           • Fast response time
                                           • Quick on-site deployment of the inspection system
                                           • Reduced downtime.

Jérémie Maillard, Commercial Manager - Oil and Gaz at Belzona:                                      Innovations in Polymer Technology

The presentation will illustrate how the use of organic coatings and paste grade materials can help with reducing capital costs and maximising asset life, showcasing latest innovations in polymer technology:  Engineered wrap systems compliant to international standards, Flange face repair and protection solutions, Emergency and surface-tolerant repair materials and Erosion-corrosion resistant linings that extend life of process equipment.

Ulrik Bork, senior engineer and coating formulator at HEMPEL´s R&D:           Coating technologies for high temperature service
Selecting the correct coating system to protect a vessel or pipe line operating under cyclic high temperature conditions can be a challenge, especially in areas where insulation is required. Since anticorrosive properties and heat resistance of a coating system does not always goes hand in hand and the fact that it can be challenging to choose the right coating system, this presentation will give an overview of the different coating technologies available for cyclic high temperature service, with a special focus on CUI protection.
Anders Rosborg Black, Corrosion specialist:                                     Inspection and quality control of TSA for CUI prevention
TSA application on insulated equipment provides a very durable CUI protection. However, optimal surface preparation and TSA application is essential, since 1% surface area with a sub-standard coating system can result in equipment failure. Experiences from inspection and quality control of TSA application on new constructions are presented and discussed.
Klaus Huber, business development manager Endress+Hauser factory:                                  From sensor to boardroom
Precise data from the field are the baseline for inventory and supply chain management. Collection, consolidation and centralization of data become more and more important in the interconnected business world. Endress Hauser develop standardized Inventory Management solutions such as field devices, scalable system designs including Weights and Measures approved systems, centralized supply chain management systems and data integration into ERP business systems.

Paul de Koning, General Manager of Netherlands Centre for Technical Insulation:                                      Corrosion, threat or chance
Insulation in industries is a great opportunity to contribute to: Energy saving (cost reduction),Decrease of emissions, Process control (quality) and (Personal) safety. Opposite to these opportunities insulation introduces a corrosion problem that might cause a process stop in case of: Non-careful preparation, inferior painting or coating, inadequate insulation systems or wrong application. Seminar participants will get familiar with all possible and effective solutions offered by the insulation industry to prevent against corrosion under insulation.

Christin Tuxen, Senior Analyst at Danske Bank Markets:                                               “New normal” in energy markets
“New normal” in energy markets – why and what it means for the global economy:
•    Oil prices are increasingly left to market forces as OPEC is loosing its grip due to surging shale supplies.
•    Oil markets are loosing its price anchor as OPEC price policy is severely challenged.
•    Cost curves are increasingly becoming the focal point.
•    Repercussions to global growth and inflation significant.
•    What to expect regarding the “oil price – global growth” interplay going forward?

Dorthe Absalon, Communication Manager:                                                                 Tank insulation and cladding solutions
The largest operation area of Norisol is thermal insulation for the industry giving them an extensive know-how within methods and materials used in thermal insulation. Why is insulation needed? What about energy optimization / economy? Which thermal solutions should you use? What are the best cladding solutions for casing and roofing?

Anne Marie Thommesen, NDT-specialist:                                                               Semi automated thickness mapping with E-mat
Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT) enables fast couplant-free thickness mapping of steel vessels and tank walls. The method is based on pulsed magnetic sensors; therefore, the method is dry and insensitive to surface conditions as coating, surface corrosion and minor layers of dirt. With an automated EMAT system, the thickness and position data are recorded and processed, and the thickness will be correctly positioned in a C-scan image. Magnetic wheel scanners make it possible to scan inaccessible areas without building scaffolds.

Hans Christian Mølau, Chief Engineer with Voith:                             Double deck floating roof design development at Statoil
Which design options should be taken into consideration in the optimal tank design? Single or double slope roof - difference in volume. Assembly details and optimal welding solutions.

Jens Henriksen , forensic examination of concrete and related materials:                    Inspection and examination of concrete structures related to fuel handling and storage facilities.
Major storage tanks are occasionally made of concrete and it is widely used as safety walls/reservoirs in tank farms. Deterioration of concrete structures can be extremely costly due to expenses for remediation and for downtime or loss of production. The presentation will introduce general concrete inspection, related NDT, laboratory examinations and monitoring methods. This includes cathodic protection of the reinforcement steel, which is the Achilles heel in many exposed concrete structures.

Looking forward to Bringing you up-to-date on the latest developments in the industry
